Your Next Customer Is an AI Agent and It's Already Comparing You to Everyone Else
Commerce is changing again.

Discovery already moved
Okay, this stat is wild.
For some retailers, traffic coming from ChatGPT is converting into brand new customers at roughly 2x the rate of traffic from Google search.
Not twice the clicks. Twice the rate of showing up as somebody the business has never seen before, which is genuinely one of the hardest, most expensive things to buy in advertising.
Everyone spent the last year arguing about where checkout should live. Meanwhile discovery just... moved, and almost nobody noticed until the traffic numbers started looking weird.
Shopify says orders from AI powered search are up 15 times year over year, with AI traffic up 8 times - self reported, sure, but it lines up with everything else pointing the same direction. And Google's real tell came in January, buried under the more boring UCP headline: dozens of new attributes built specifically for conversational shopping, stuff like answers to common product questions and compatible accessories.
Google isn't racing to rebuild checkout. Think why?!
The feed is the storefront
Because it's rebuilding the feed.
And, that matters more than it sounds like it should. When somebody asks an agent for running shoes for flat feet under $150, the agent doesn't browse your site. It reads it. It pulls your specs, your reviews, your delivery promises, and lines you up against every competitor in the category at machine speed.
Your homepage never loads. Nobody sees the fancy brand video you spent $108K on.
Your product data is the storefront now, full stop, and the human might not show up until step four of a process you can't see happening.
And what genuinely surprised me: one study found shopping surfaces trigger on 12% of open ended product questions but only 3% of questions that mention a brand name by, well… name. People aren't asking for you. They're describing a problem and letting the agent build the shortlist for them.

Share of transactions that involve an agent today
You win by being legible
You don't win that game by being memorable. You win it by being legible.
Which cuts two ways, and the bad way is quiet:
Clean, specific product data gets you shortlisted in conversations you'll never even know happened.
Messy data, specs buried in a PDF, contradictory sizing charts - you're just invisible, in exactly the moment someone had the most money in their hand.
There's no page 2 of an agent's answer. There's a shortlist, and then there's everybody else.
Where this stands
None of this requires believing agents will do most of the shopping soon. They won't - something like 3% of transactions today involve one at all. It just requires believing that a fast growing, high-intent slice of shopping already runs through software reading your catalog before any human ever meets your brand, and that slice already converts really well.
Both of those are already true, and you can check the second one in your own analytics right now.
Check your own numbers
Honestly, this whole thing rhymes with search around 2003. The stores that took the crawler seriously as a reader built a 15 year head start while everyone else called SEO a fad. Same deal here, except the agent doesn't just rank your shelf - it walks down the aisle, picks the thing up, and tells the shopper which two options to actually consider.
Discovery has already moved.
Go pull up your analytics and compare what your AI referral traffic converts at vs. your search traffic. That one number will tell you exactly how urgent this is for you.
